What is Ideal Weight?
Ideal weight is an estimate of the healthy weight range for a person based on their height, gender, and sometimes body frame. It provides a target weight range that supports optimal health and reduces disease risk.
Calculation Formulas
Our calculator uses four scientifically established formulas to provide a comprehensive ideal weight assessment:
Devine Formula (1974)
Widely used in medical settings, based on height and gender. Most commonly referenced formula in clinical practice.
Robinson Formula (1983)
A modification of the Devine formula, considered more accurate for modern populations.
Miller Formula (1983)
Developed from large population studies, provides conservative estimates.
Hamwi Formula (1964)
One of the original formulas, still used by some healthcare professionals.
Healthy BMI Range
In addition to specific formulas, we calculate the healthy weight range based on BMI (Body Mass Index):
- Healthy BMI Range: 18.5 - 24.9
- Underweight: BMI < 18.5
- Overweight: BMI 25.0 - 29.9
- Obese: BMI ≥ 30.0
Factors Affecting Ideal Weight
- Body Frame: Small, medium, or large frame can affect ideal weight by 10%
- Muscle Mass: Athletes may have higher ideal weights due to muscle density
- Age: Metabolism changes with age, affecting optimal weight ranges
- Ethnicity: Different ethnic groups may have varying ideal weight ranges
- Health Conditions: Medical conditions may require weight adjustments
Using the Results
Weight Management Goals
Use the ideal weight range as a general guide for setting realistic weight management goals.
Health Assessment
Compare your current weight to the ideal range to assess health risks and plan interventions.
Important Considerations
- Ideal weight is an estimate, not an exact target
- Focus on overall health rather than just the number on the scale
- Consult healthcare professionals before making significant weight changes
- Consider body composition (muscle vs. fat) rather than weight alone
- Gradual weight changes (1-2 pounds per week) are most sustainable
